American Music Awards 2013: The Weird and Wonderful

The 2013 American Music Awards hit Los Angeles this week, and with it came some interesting and outrageous outfits and hairstyles. We chose some of our favourites...

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne rocked a purple pastel coloured braided up-do, with studded detailing along the sides. We love this glamourous yet edgy look! To get this look, try the De Lorenzo Novasemi Semi-permanent soft colour mousse, the De Lorenzo Elements Anti-humidity shine spray and finish off with the De Lorenzo Elements Granite Hairspray.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus rocked her blonde pixie cut with a crisp white pant suit. We recommend the De Lorenzo Elements Sandstorm to maintain volume and texture in short hair, and finishing off any look with the De Lorenzo Granite Non-Aerosol Hairspray to lock in styles and maintain a healthy shine.

Rihanna

Rihanna styled her strands in a 'doobie-wrap' which is typically worn around the house to set hair straight. Never the less, rule-breaker Rihanna rocks this look on the red carpet! To achieve this glossy shiny look, try the De Lorenzo allevi8 shine serum, and the De Lorenzo Elements Anti-Humidity Spray.

Ke$ha

We love Ke$ha's two toned pastel hair colour, styled with a soft wave through it. You can achieve a half blue, half lavender look with the De Lorenzo Novasemi Semi-permanent colour mousse, and the De Lorenzo allevi8 shine serum.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga never fails to surprise, arriving on a human powered horse, and rocking blonde long luscious locks. To achieve this gorgeous look, we recommend the De Lorenzo Elements Extinguish Thermal Protection Spray to protect long hair from damage, and the De Lorenzo Afternglow Anti-Humidity Shine Spray to get a healthy shine.

Hair Crush: Blake Lively

Golden haired girl Blake Lively is best know from television series Gossip Girl. She has also starred in movies such as The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, The Green Lantern and Savages. Married to the gorgeous Ryan Reynolds, this girl can do no wrong! Not to mention her beautiful tousled blonde mane, that is always looking perfect!

Blake's long luscious hair is usually styled in shiny looking curls, and loose waves with plenty of volume. When she works an up do, she opts for either sleek and chic, or a more effortless textured messy look.

De Lorenzo's tips for working with long hair:
  • For thick, volumous looking hair like Blake's, we recommend the De Lorenzo Elements Sea Swell Volumising Lotion
  • For healthy looking, shiny locks, try the De Lorenzo Afterglow Anti-Humidity Shine Spray
  • For the added texture try the De Lorenzo Elements Sandstorm Texture Spray
  • To finish off any look, use the De Lorenzo Elements Granite Hairspray for beautiful shine, and to hold your style in place.

New innovation in hairspray!

We are excited to announce the launch of our Granite Super Hold Hair Spray, a non-aerosol finemist hairspray.  The non-aerosol form delivers an instant, firm, anti-humidity hold allowing for more structured control when styling. It also acts as an ideal finishing product as it imbues hair with shine and luminosity. Unlike aerosol cans, the non-aerosol applicator emits less product, therefore ensuring the product will last longer.

The advantage of the Granite spray lies within its ingredients. With cinnamon oil, fig essence and basil extract, this spray utilises an unlikely combination to create a styling essential. Natural Rock Crystals are the key ingredient, as they provide texture and shine are sought and then ground together to obtain rock crystal powder. Castor oil is then used to help distribute the strong holding agents while increasing shine. Like all De Lorenzo products, the Granite spray is cruelty-free, made of organic and fair trade ingredients and is 100% Australian made and owned.

This product is fabulous for giving any hairstyle a healthy shine, while keeping everything in place. We love using the De Lorenzo Granite hair spray for hairstyles with volume, such as a gorgeous 60's inspired bouffant ponytail.

Get the look:
  1. Section off the hair at the crown of your head and tease the hair in this section from underneath to give it extra volume.
  2. Tie the rest of your hair up. You can now pin the top section with bobby pins to hold it in place.
  3. Mist hair with the De Lorenzo Granite Super Hold Hair Spray for extra shine and hold.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Spring 2014

This week we have seen some hair trends emerging from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, as designers showcase their Spring 2014 collections.

The low slung ponytail
Zimmerman styled hair in a side parted low ponytail, keeping the front a little wispy, and the back straight and sleek. Effortlessly chic!

Get the look:

1. Building a textured foundation in the roots of the hair is key for this style. Start by parting hair on the side, and begin applying the De Lorenzo Sandstorm dry texture spray in the roots of the hair. Manipulate with your hands to texturise and separate
2. Brush through the ends of the hair, and spritz with the De Lorenzo thermal protection spray, before  straightening the ends of your hair.
3. Pull the hair loosely into a ponytail at the nape and leaving volume at the top.
4. Re adjust the hair around your face by pulling gently, to create a looser, more gentle look.
5. Section off a thinner strand of hair from under the ponytail, and wrap around the base of the ponytail to hide the hair tie. Pin into place.
6. Finish off with a mist of De Lorenzo vapour mist hairspray to hold it all in place.

Long and luscious
Tory Burch showed a easy to wear, natural, soft, healthy looking hair, with a return of the middle part. Classic, and classy!

Get the look:
1. Apply De Lorenzo de-tangler spray to wet hair and comb through to evenly distribute.

2. Spray hair with the De Lorenzo thermal protection spray before blowdrying straight using a round brush.

3. Use a straightener to run through any stubborn sections.

4. Spritz with the De Lorenzo afterglow anti-humidity shine spray to control frizz and add a healthy shine.

Messy up-do
Tracy Reese showed a messy up-do, displaying less than perfect curls worked into an elegant bun, with a twist.

2. Separate curls with fingers creating a messy look, and spritz with the De Lorenzo amplify volumising spray to add texture and hold the curls in place.

3. Begin pinning or tying the hair into a loose bun, and pull at sections at the front to loosen and create a more gentle, messy look.

In Bloom is the latest collection from De Lorenzo to celebrate the arrival for the 2013 spring/summer season.

In Bloom is the embodiment of femininity and showcases three new colour trends that will work for any existing hair colour. In Bloom is all about embracing your natural colour and highlighting the natural tones that shine through, whether they are warm or cool.

Orchid is for brunettes who want to make more of a dramatic statement. The trend is for deep, rich, dark tones, bucking previous trends for lighting in the warmer months. This trend will ensure you stand out in the crowd.

Rose is for the titan goddess in all of us and embodies the soft, feminine strawberry tones of Novacolors 'Sunray Gold' right through to the deeper richer Novacolor 'Fire Red'.

Violet lets blondes be as bold as they can be with the trend moving towards more nordic tones than last season with colours like the Novacolor Ice Cool Pearl.

With In Bloom say goodbye to Ballayage and hello to more full length blocked tones. Novacolor Professional Salon Colours are especially developed for our harsh climate and available at selected professional salons nationally.

The Beyoncé Hair Evolution

The Good, the Bad

and the Ugly

Though words like bad and ugly are those you would never wish to attribute to the queen of pop, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, a retrospective look at Queen Bey’s hair evolution suggests that like a good red wine, she just keeps getting better with age.

In 1997, at an impressive 16 years of age, Beyoncé burst onto the scene within the girl-band Destiny’s Child. With tight locks and blonde highlights, this singer-songwriter blew us away with her powerful vocals and catchy tunes.

In 2002, as Beyoncé played Foxxy Cleopatra in ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’, a retro blonde afro became her newest look.

The sleek, straight blonde hairstyle she continued to rock for years to come debuted in 2003. Whilst some would bring the length of her fringe into question – it was a look that Queen Bey reworked and settled into very nicely over time

In 2005, Beyoncé displayed an elegant reworking of her Destiny’s Child look. Now with larger curls and more subtle highlights, Beyoncé was becoming the hair chameleon who could do no wrong.

In 2007, Beyoncé returned to blonde, bringing to question: how does her hair recover?! It was at this time that Queen Bey undertook her first worldwide concert tour, ‘The Beyoncé Experience’, visiting 97 different venues! Are you also a hair chameleon? For tips on how to care for treated or damaged hair, read De Lorenzo's tips below.

In 2008, she chopped her locks, to create a fresh, bouncy look – indicative of her maturity within the industry, providing the benchmark in terms of dazzling elegance.

In 2012, months after giving birth to daughter Blue Ivy, Beyoncé was seen at a game with her husband Jay-Z with sleek blonde hair and with the return of the fringe.

The most recent change to Beyoncé’s look has been her pixie cut, revealed on Twitter two weeks ago. Yet it seems that after a mix of reviews, Beyoncé has quickly rethought the decision, sporting shoulder bob extensions for her performance at V Festival in England last week.

We want you to weigh in, what’s your favourite Beyoncé look?

De Lorenzo's Tips for Caring for Coloured or Treated Hair:
  • If like Beyoncé you frequently straighten or curl your hair, it's important to administer a Thermal Protection Spray before applying heat. Try De Lorenzo's 'Extinguish' Spray (RRP $23.95 )
  • Managing and styling curly hair can be a frustrating, time-consuming process. De Lorenzo's 'Barrel Wave' Curl Defining Lotion (RRP $22.95) does all the work for you, simply apply it to wet hair and let the organic properties do the rest!
  • Otherwise De Lorenzo's 'Motion' Medium Hold Texture Mousse (RRP $19.95) contains styling and conditioning properties that will provide curl retention, even in humidity!
  • Ongoing colouring and treatments can strip your hair of its natural protein, making your hair more prone to breakage. De Lorenzo's 'Protein Complex' Spray (RRP $27.95) is a leave-in spray that provides your hair with the necessary protein to avoid breakage and maintain colour.
  • Like our mind and body, sometimes our hair simply needs to be rejuvenated. At this point, De Lorenzo recommends 'The Ends' (RRP $19.50), a treatment lotion from the 'Rejuven8' Prescriptives Range that will provide your hair with a unique blend of shine and sealing actives.

Tips for Red Hot Hair Care: Your guide to the hottest hair this season

Feeling hot! Hot! HOT!

It's no surprise that more and more we are seeing people dye their hair red. With the possibility for subtle copper shades (Deborah Ann Woll), bright beaconing reds (Christina Hendricks) or sensual dark tones (Isla Fisher) - our love affair with red hair has never been stronger. Whilst in yonder years children may have been mocked for having red hair, it has now become a style emulated for its unique nature and its Hollywood-esque 'femme fatale' feel.

Here are a few fun facts about red hair that we bet you didn't know!

  • Red hair occurs naturally for 1-2% of the population
  • The term 'redhead' has been used since 1510
  • Scotland has the highest population of redheads at 13% (however 40% of the population carry the recessive gene)
  • Queen Elizabeth I was a redhead and during the Elizabethan era red hair was fashionable for women
  • In India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, henna and saffron are used on hair to give it a bright red appearance

The mixture of two pigment groups determines the colour of our hair, namely eumelanin and pheomelanin. Red hair possesses a great deal of pheomelanin. Yet as pheomelanin degrades faster in UV light, red hair colour loses its vibrancy faster than most!

De Lorenzo have extended their Novafusion Colour Care line so as to ensure that your hair remains vibrant and healthy between treatments. The Novafusion Intense Colour Care Shampoo (RRP $25.95) is available in copper, intense red and ruby red - so whether your hair is a youthful copper shade or a fiery vixen red you can maintain healthy, beautiful tresses.

When caring for coloured hair it is important to use a weekly hair treatment, as this fills the gaps in the outer hair structure and thus keeps in coloured pigments. De Lorenzo's Equilibrium Deep Masque Treatment (RRP $31) restores your hair, providing it with shine and a silky texture.

If taking the plunge, and dying your hair red is too intimidating a venture, try Novasemi Cherry Brown, Copper or Chestnut Red (RRP $21.95). This semi-permanent soft colour mousse allows you to experiment with exciting new colours while still protecting your hair. Novasemi lasts 6-8 washes.

So paint the town red!
